How to Start a String Trimmer

The Snapper String Trimmer is designed for easy starting and operation but be sure to read your operator’s manual before starting the trimmer and always follow all safety instructions. Be sure to avoid any contact with the muffler, a hot muffler can cause serious burns.

To start a cold string trimmer engine:

  • Place the unit on a flat surface
  • Press the primer bulb six times
  • Move the lever to the start position
  • Pull the started rope handle five times
  • If the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, only pull three times
  • Squeeze and hold the trigger and pull the starter rope handle until the engine starts

The above instructions also apply to a warm trimmer engine that has run out of fuel.

If the string trimmer engine does not start, it is probably flooded. To start a flooded gas trimmer engine:

  • Place the unit on a flat surface
  • Squeeze and hold the trigger
  • Pull the starter cord handle until the engine starts

To start a warm engine:

  • Place the unit on a flat surface
  • Squeeze a warm trigger
  • Pull the starter cord handle until the engine starts

If the trimmer still does not start, refer to the table in your operator's manual or call your local Snapper Dealer.
